To my future child, and all that you will become

You are smart, fierce, and perfect to me. Never let anyone tell you otherwise

My Child, My Baby, My Everything,

You might wonder what’s the use of me writing to you, and to be honest I hope you do. I hope we communicated enough while you were growing up for you to never have to read this. I know I made mistakes – I will make mistakes from the minute you will be in my arms – but I hope a lack of communication won’t be one of them. And if it were, here are the things I hope you learnt from me.

I won’t be a stay-at-home mum, but it doesn’t mean I don’t love you

Despite how much I love you, and you know you have my unconditional love no matter what, my career is important to me and I know sooner or later you will understand that. I won’t be a stay-at-home mom.

Being a woman, I need to be part of a changing society, and leaving the house every morning is part of it. As a feminist, I need to show you the way, and I believe showing you women can be strong and important in the society in playing a role in the economy is big to me. You will do better, boy or girl, and I know that, but I want you to have the basis. Trust me, it’s heart-breaking to know that I won’t see every first step you will take, but I know it is the right path towards an equal society, and I want you to see that.

You can talk to me about anything

Even though I won’t always be there, I want you to know that you can always tap on my shoulder to tell me whatever you want. Even if you feel bad about it, even if you think it is shameful. I am your mother, I can take anything. I am here to make your life easier and I want to do it in any possible way. You lied? It happens. You made a mistake? It happens. You are LGBT? Is that even supposed to be a problem? I hope I taught you better than to believe so.

Express yourself

I hope I will be clear enough to make you understand the world is yours to make. No one should impose on you their idea of it. You are smart, fierce, and perfect to me. Never let anyone tell you otherwise. Please embrace who you are for you are the one and only love of your own life. Your mother will get old, so will your dad, so will haters. We will stop existing, but you will still be there. To you, you should matter more than we do.

If there is only one thing you know for sure, it’s that I love you to the moon and back.

You are my world, and I love you just the way you are.

Mum
